Does big data = big intelligence?
Yes. We have to learn to handle Information superhighway more judiciously and effectively. Its potential is totally underutilized and there is quite a lot of scope for its productive use.
Somewhere between 10-12% of the world’s total electricity generation is used for information communications technologies (cooling, powering batteries, running ICT equipment) (http://bit.ly/1jldRe3). Computer server banks including those that serve ‘the cloud’ are consuming energy at a mind boggling rate – doubling consumption every five years. It is claimed that every two days we create as much information as we did from the dawn of civilization up until 2003 (http://tcrn.ch/1h55bnj). There is a significant environmental cost associated with the storage of big data so what’s the benefit? With this much information on hand surely we are making better, more informed environmental decisions. The reality is that only a tiny fraction of this data is analysed so the environmental reward is small.
